It's getting queer out here! 🌈 "I knew It's getting queer out here! 🌈

"I knew that as a non-binary person I felt particularly comfortable with my body and myself when I was in the outdoors, like it connected me with being the care-free little kid I had once been. So I particularly had trans folk in mind when I conceived of the idea of a walking group."

Founder of the LGBTQIA+ walking group @queerouthereadventures located in the North West of England, Ailish Breen shines the light on what it’s like to join one of their welcoming community hiking events:

🗨️ "During the pandemic, the closure of lots of LGBTQIA+ spaces exacerbated the isolation and neglect experienced by many LGBTQIA+ people. And some of these spaces, usually clubs or bars, have taken such a financial hit from the pandemic that they are now closed for good. Bars and clubs have always been the place that queer folks can go to find community and safety. But there has been a recent push for more non-alcohol centered spaces for LGBTQIA+ people to meet in. We deserve to find community and safety in other, healthier ways too.

I started Queer Out Here in January 2020 when I was taking a break from drinking and suddenly realised I was never in completely queer spaces any more.

Queer Out Here hosted our first walk in the Peak District with around 12 people on a wet and windy January day. Gradually, the word has spread, and on our last walk we had almost 50 attendees. There is something awesome about walking through the countryside, everybody chatting and laughing and taking on the challenge of the walk together. It’s empowering."

Are you taking curlew caution when hiking in the u Are you taking curlew caution when hiking in the uplands?

⚠️ At this time of year, Curlews are nesting on the ground and are either on eggs or with very small chicks meaning they're very vulnerable to disturbances which may result in them abandoning their nests.

🦮 You can help by keeping your dog on a lead if you are hiking in the uplands and keeping to public rights of way if possible.

🐤 Curlews are a ground nesting bird and like many of our birds in the UK are in decline and face a high risk of extinction over the coming years if action is not taken

Sad news came in over the weekend about the tragic Sad news came in over the weekend about the tragic loss of Tom Furey, BMC North East Wales Access Volunteer and well-loved Outdoor Instructor.

In his role Tom had helped with the agreed climbing restrictions in the Eglwyseg Valley, attended site meetings with land owners and conservation bodies, and assisted the Denbighshire Countryside Service with peregrine ringing and also kept an eye on, and replaced some of the lower-offs and decaying fixed equipment at Trevor Rocks, near Llangollen.

Our own BMC Welsh Access Officer and Tom's close friend, Tom Carrick, has written his own personal tribute:

"His passion for the outdoors was infectious and he positively influenced everyone he met. He went to endless efforts to get to know new people and would talk to everyone at the crag when he climbed (it’s amazing he got any climbing done at all). This has been shown by the seemingly endless tributes sent through social media of memories people had of him."

🗨️ "It's really good having another category 🗨️ "It's really good having another category as personally I don't fit into the male or female boxes and I've never done a comp before and I think that's one of the reasons why. For there to be a third box tonight I feel included, I feel good about it" 🌈

Hosted by Huddersfield's @freeklime climbing wall, the annual bouldering event Freekfest took place last month. The big aim of the competition was diversity, and featured a trans and non-binary category, so everyone felt they could participate and feel included.
